Standardized Tests

Although Texas home schoolers are not required to take standardized tests during each

academic schoolyear, home schoolers do have the option of using different types of testing to determine grade placement and to assess their child’s academic progress throughout the years. As a SACHSA member, you will be able to have your child take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills annually in the Spring. Watch your email for notification.

College Entrance Exams

College entrance exams such as the ACT and SAT are very important for college-bound homeschooled students because these students do not have a class rank.

The PSAT is administered once/year and is typically for 11th grade students. However, it can be taken in earlier grades as practice. Scoring very well  on the PSAT can lead to a National Merit Scholarship.

Test scores on ACT and SAT are used by college admissions.  Many scholarship awards are based, in part, on these test scores. Therefore, high test scores can be worth thousands of dollars. The ACT and SAT are administered a few times/year. You can find the schedule on the websites. You need to sign up several weeks before the test date.

Test scores often improve with practice and study. Preparation options include 1) buying study guides and practice tests from a bookstore or online bookstore, 2) viewing free sample questions on the website, 3) attending a seminar about test taking strategies.
